Vancouver, British Columbia – January 11, 2016:  ZincNyx Energy Solutions, Inc. is pleased to announce its participation as industrial collaborators in a project supporting the development of next generation clean technologies. The honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, announced a $4 million investment to be put toward this project from the Government of Canada. This funding comes at a time when interest in clean technology continues to rise worldwide. The project is a collaborative initiative between the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and a Canada-wide team of organizations in the clean energy sector. Led by Dr. Gregory Jerkiewicz of Queen’s University, the project aims to further the development of next generation clean technologies through innovative research.

ZincNyx was invited to participate as an industrial collaborator as an extension to the catalyst enhancement work being conducted in conjunction with Simon Fraser University.  The SFU professors who are project partners in the Discovery Frontiers initiative have been working with ZincNyx for over two years and ZincNyx is pleased to further assist development in these revolutionary technologies for a cleaner energy landscape.

Dr. David Bruce, the principal research scientist working on the catalyst development in collaboration with SFU and UBC notes, “Alkaline technologies are efficient and robust, with the added advantage of no need for precious metal catalysts. The work outlined by Dr. Jerkiewicz and his team is poised to set new, world-class standards for efficient energy conversion technologies and will further improve cost-effective energy storage solutions such as those in development at ZincNyx.”

ZincNyx has committed facility space and opportunities for industrial trials to support the development of the advanced catalytic nickel foams, with integrated experimental work ongoing between the university research groups and ZincNyx research staff.

“We are excited to be a part of this ground-breaking research, which will further develop the clean technology sector,” said ZincNyx President & CEO Suresh Singh.

B.C. firms see a future in power storage systems

Large-capacity batteries store power as it’s produced and supply it when it’s needed.

The problem for a lot of renewable power sources — wind and solar farms, run-of-river hydro — is that they often pump out the most power when utilities don’t need it, but dim down when they really want it.

For electric utilities, balancing those peaks and valleys from intermittent energy sources is a major challenge to integrating them into the grid, which is why some B.C.-based firms are hoping to cash in on the development of energy-storage technologies.

Energy sector interest rising in the electron bank

The next big thing in renewable energy isn’t producing it – it’s storing it

For a few hours on June 16, 2013, Germany generated so much electricity through wind and solar that producers had to pay utilities to take surplus electrons, and it was the traditional producers – nuclear and coal-fired power plants – that had to pay.
